Short stories.
When done well, they still convey the author's gift of storytelling without compromising their voice and can be just as enthralling as long story forms. I found this to be the case with The Complete Stories by Zora Neale Hurston. The setting and scenes are similar to her novels, and she doesn't skimp on character development, despite page limits. One of my favorite short stories "Black Death" is in this book and the detail is so dense it's almost like watching a movie.
